What is the best reason for you to get a massage today?

Studies conducted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and published in The New York Times, found that volunteers who received a 50-minute Swedish massage experienced significant decreases in levels of the stress hormone cortisone, as well as arginine vasopressin-a hormone that can lead to increases in cortisone. Volunteers also had increases in the number of  white blood cells that are part of the immune system, and a boost in the immune cells that may help fight colds and the flu. Also a significant boost in the immune cells that help fight the cold and flu.

Over time, the body builds up unhealthy amounts of stress hormones in response to work deadlines, traffic jams, relationship problems and more. These hormones can cause physical problems, like digestive issues, headaches and sleeplessness.  Massage's  decrease the amount of stress hormones in the body, leaving you feeling completely relaxed and rested, even after the session is over. The techniques used during the massage trigger changes in the brain's chemistry, resulting in reduced stress and an improved mood.

Stress can cause muscle soreness, but massage relaxes the muscles and reduces pain. By using special techniques, the therapist can remove tension from the muscles and increase flexibility. The blood flow facilitated by massage also delivers oxygen and nutrients to the muscles, leading to a reduction in pain, inflammation and stiffness.

A massage also improves blood circulation, leading to lower blood pressure and improved body functions. The techniques used during the session facilitate blood flow through congested areas, releasing pressure and allowing new blood to flow through targeted areas. When the muscles are gently pulled and squeezed, lactic acid is flushed from the muscles, which contributes to the improved functioning of the lymphatic system. This system rids the body's internal organs and muscles of metabolic waste, leading to better functioning and lower blood pressure.

The lowered blood pressure caused by massages can reduce one's risk for developing anxiety, depression and hostile feelings, control stress hormone levels and lower the risk of having a stroke, heart attack or kidney failure.

Deep tissue massage therapy is different than  Swedish massage, but the deeper pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints).

A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that people's blood pressure fell after a single 45 to 60 minute deep tissue massage. Additionally, a 2010 meta-analysis in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that massage modalities like deep tissue reduce stress hormone levels and heart rate while boosting mood and relaxation by triggering the release of oxytocin and serotonin.

Deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as chronic muscle pain, injury rehabilitation, and the following conditions:

  • Chronic pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Limited mobility
  • Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury)
